
Glenmuckloch Pumped Storage Hydro
Glenmuckloch is a pumped storage hydro project in Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland. It is planned at 210MW and capable of operating at full output for over 8 hours, providing long‑duration storage and grid flexibility to the UK’s electricity markets.
Project milestones

A strategic site for flexibility
Southwest Scotland hosts significant operational and consented wind generation which are frequently subjected to operational curtailments due to limited grid transmissions capacity. Major upgrades to transmission infrastructure are planned, with a proposed substation adjacent to the project site, where Glenmuckloch will connect via a twin 132kV circuit.

Advanced development status
Land rights have been secured through a lease agreement with Buccleuch Estates, alongside the granting of planning consent and key licences. A grid connection offer is also in place, with energisation targeted for May 2029.

Consents and licences
The project has secured a full suite of regulatory approvals under the UK and Scottish planning framework, including a generation licence under Section 6 of the Electricity Act 1989, Section 36 consent with deemed planning permission, an order permitting the acquisition of water rights, and a Controlled Activities Regulations (CAR) licence governing water use and environmental impact.

Rewriting an industrial legacy
Glenmuckloch will restore and revitalise a former open-cast coal mine, repurposing existing land to support the energy transition. The project is designed to bring new purpose to a disused site, using above-ground construction and a closed-loop water system to create long-duration storage and grid flexibility.
Designed for deliverability
Pre‑construction development is well advanced, with land rights, planning consent and a grid connection offer already secured.
